Swasthya Sathi scheme helps women get back her vision

13/08/2020
This is case from the Alipurduar District . A 40 years old beneficiary who received ‘Swasthya Sathi’ Card on 13th Nov, 2019 under SECC D5 (SC/ST households) category. The family is dependent on the earning of her husband who is a bus conductor in a private transport company. She experienced vision loss in the right eye, early in the month of March, 2020. Thereupon, she tried over the counter eye medicine from a local pharmacy with no improvement. The ongoing COVID – 19 lockdown made her husband jobless and as her vision kept worsening they were desperate for treatment. On further deterioration of the vision, she visited Alipurduar Lion’s Eye Hospital which is renowned in the area for low priced quality healthcare. There she was diagnosed for TOTAL RETINAL DETACHMENT (which was by then more than 3 months old). The doctors there referred her to Retinal Institute of Bengal (RIB), which specializes in Laser Surgery for Diabetic Retinopathy, which is a Swasthya Sathi empanelled Hospital. The woman was admitted at the Retinal Institute of Bengal (RIB), where Dr. Somnath Chakraborty, a vitreo-retina surgeon, successfully operated her three weeks back under ‘Swasthya Sathi’ scheme. She is now doing remarkably well.
